The American Segmental Bridge Institute was incorporated in 1989 as a nonprofit organization to provide a forum where owners, designers, constructors, and suppliers can meet to further refine current design, construction and construction management procedures, and evolve new techniques that will advance fhe quality and use of concrete segmental bridges. ASBI is a unique organization in that all components of the bridge construction industry are included as members.

ASBI holds an annual two day seminar each Spring on "Design and Construction of Segmental Concrete Bridges." The seminars are normally cosponsored by a State Department of Transportation. The annual two day ASBI Convention is held in October or November at a location near an active segmental bridge construction site. A number of ASBI Committees are active in development of design and construction specifications for segmental bridges. A PCI-ASBI Joint Committee developed "AASHTO-PCI-ASBI Segmental Box Girder Standards for Span-by-Span and Balanced Cantilever Construction."

In 2001, ASBI began a certification program for supervisors and inspectors of grouting operations to provide the training necessary to understand and successfully implement grouting specifications for post-tensioned structures. Individuals that successfully completed the the grouting certification training classes held August 6-8, 2001, and January 14-16, 2002 are listed in th "grouting certification" section of the website. The third grouting certification training class is scheduled for June 24-26, 2002 at the University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida. Registration information and the program for the June 24-26, 2002 grouting certification training can be accessed through the ASBI events section of the website.
